Melghat is a significant tiger reserve that was declared as one of the first nine tiger reserves under the Project Tiger in 1973-74. The Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1985, and it includes the Gugamal National Park, is the core area of reserve and covers an area of 361.28 km2.

Geography

Melghat, located in the South-western Satpura mountain ranges, is a beautiful area with unending hills and ravines. It was declared a tiger reserve in 1974 and is divided into Sipna, Gugamal, and Akot Wildlife Divisions. The reserve is dominated by teak trees and is a catchment area for five major rivers, including the Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga, and Dolar.ti.

Tourism

Melghat Tiger Reserve, located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, is a wildlife sanctuary and a tiger reserve. Established in 1967, it was declared a tiger reserve in 1974 and was among the first nine tiger reserves notified under Project Tiger. Apart from tigers, the reserve is home to Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Sambar deer, Leopard, Nilgai, and the endangered Forest Owlet. Tourism is distributed along four centers/villages, namely Semadoh, Chikhaldara, Harisal, and Shahnur, with additional stay facilities at Kolkas. The nearest railway station to reach these centers is Amravati.
